Why is it important to use natural, paraben and preservative free products?
I formulate my products under the philosophy that the skin’s absorption of pure ingredients and active botanicals without harsh chemicals achieves the highest level of efficacy in enhancing overall skin wellness. It is more than just skincare. It’s a lifestyle and a culture. What you choose to put on your skin is as important as what you choose to ingest into your body. Every product uses natural aromatics and is made without parabens, preservatives, petrochemicals, sulfates and synthetic dyes. When you can effectively address your skin concerns using products that use a natural preservative system, why wouldn’t you try to limit your exposure to them wherever possible?
What are your skincare secrets/ tips and tricks?
My patented anti-oxidant blend is based on my own family’s beauty traditions and philosophy that transcends generations. They work, and that is why they’ve stood the test of time. Paired with a lifestyle focused on wellness- clean diet, exercise, proper sleep and plenty of water- you can properly protect your skin from environmental aggressors and diminish the signs of premature aging.
Some skincare tips and tricks I live by:
ALWAYS wear sunscreen.
Regular exfoliation is key to radiant glowing skin. There are so many ways to exfoliate these days. My favorite remains the use of natural enzymatic exfoliators like papaya and pumpkin.
Use lotion right out of the shower to lock in moisture
Big sunglasses are essential to protect your delicate skin around the eyes from UV exposure as well as squinting which can cause crows feet.
SLEEP! Your skin restores itself the most while you are asleep – take advantage of that by addressing your biggest skin concern and using a product that you can sleep in. You will be amazed at how effective this trick can be.
What are the keys to being a successful women business owner?
The greatest lesson I have learned on this journey is that you have to stay true to yourself. Never second-guess yourself. Never take a shortcut. Surround yourself with people who have talent, are loyal, and make you proud of your business. That being said, don’t accept no when you can find an alternative way to get a yes. Most importantly, never give up.
How is it working as a Mother/ Daughter team?
Running my business with my daughter, Rochelle, as you can imagine has it’s ups and downs but I have to say no one else has your back and best interests in mind like family. We travel together a lot on business trips. Rochelle now calls these leisure trips – business and pleasure mixed together. When you are on the road as much as we are, we always have fun. Even on an 18-hour flight to China. Rochelle will come out of the bathroom with a masque on her face and start doing yoga stretches in the galley. I don’t know if she’s trying to be funny but she always has me laughing. This will be our 20th year working together. We definitely know each other’s strengths and weaknesses inside out. We also have many of the same strengths so there must be some genetic element that makes this all work. The key is to leverage each of our strengths to move the business forward and divide and conquer whenever we can. We are both incredibly persistent; I’m definitely a little more persistent. My daughter is obsessed with quotes and staying positive and emails them to me and prints the ‘really good ones’. Every time she does I’m always like ‘we already do that’ but she likes to keep it visual. If you don’t ask, the answer will always be no. If you don’t take a risk, you’ll never know what could have been. It you make a mistake, take ownership, learn your lesson and move on. I always say that for every rule there is an exception, and your job is to find the exception. Rochelle says she is the exception to every rule.
