1. What personal experience prompted her to look more deeply into the beauty industry?
Honest Beauty was a total passion project for me. Beauty has actually been a passion of mine since I was a kid. Growing up, my mom was trained to be a cosmetologist and was always testing different makeup and hair looks on me. She taught me that makeup is a way to have fun and express yourself.
I started acting and getting my makeup done when I was young. I’ve always looked for beauty products that performed and made with ingredients I could trust. Over the years I’ve tried everything from products that worked but irritated my skin, to alternatives that didn’t deliver and were extremely expensive. Ever since I’ve been in the makeup chair, I’ve wanted to create beauty products that were high impact, reflected the true diversity of skin tones and types and created lasting looks with safe ingredients because women deserve to have uncompromised products that work.
I’m passionate about making products for a diverse range of skin types and tones. Healthy, happy skin is the foundation for every beauty look, so our skincare addresses specific concerns to leave you with a gorgeous looking glow. I know personally how hard it can be to find the right shades for a flawless finish. That’s why we use rich pigments in a comprehensive range of colors made to blend seamlessly with every shade of skin.
2. What amazing consumer accessible beauty resources has she found?
It’s such a great time for beauty – there are so many resources out there. Whether you want to learn how to do the latest makeup trick, looking for the perfect hairstyle, or if you just need inspiration to update your look, there are endless ways to find it. YouTube, Instagram, Blogs and Pinterest have made it so much easier to find beauty inspiration. My personal go-to’s are sites like Byrdie and Refinery29, and, of course, the Honest Beauty blog.
3. Why is paying attention to what we put on our skin as important as what we put in our body?
People are so conscious about that they eat and what they put in their body but it’s easy to forget that what we put on our skin is equally as important. Skin is our largest organ so it’s super important to pay attention to what we are putting on it, but there are so many ingredients out there and so much information that it can be really confusing. I wanted to simplify it for people, which is another reason I was so passionate about creating Honest Beauty.
Honest Beauty was created for a conscious, connected and confident woman: No matter her age, she has a lot of expectations for products that work but not a lot of time to research and understand all of the ingredients that are on the label. She cares about what she consumes and she looks to brands that she can trust as her go-to (because she’s always on-the-go)!
4. What is the best advice your mother ever gave you?
The best advice my mom ever gave me was to pursue your dreams and do everything 100%; give it your all and anything is possible. You won’t know unless you try.
5. What is your favorite book that made you the woman you are today?
My favorite book is “Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way: Timeless Strategies from the First Lady of Courage” because Eleanor Roosevelt is so inspiring. She was a civil rights and human rights activist and social justice was at the core of everything she did. She stuck up for veterans, people of color and women and she never took no for an answer. Through thick and thin she never faltered when fighting for her beliefs.
